About

STEVE TURNER

Badminton England Coach – Level 2

Coaching experience:

Qualified as a BE Level 1 (assistant) coach in 2003 when I left county juniors and later as a BE Level 2 coach in 2005/6.

In the early years I coached predominantly county junior players from U11 age group to U17, and worked with some of Warwickshire’s most talented players, and skilled and experienced coaches.

I spent a number of years as a senior coach/Age Group Coach with WSBA, running the U13 age group and later the U15 age group. Each time working with a great partner AGC and with a fantastic coaching support team.

I also helped with grass roots organisations such as Rugby Youth Badminton Club and the early formation of Mid-Warwickshire Badminton Coaching’s Monday night sessions for juniors and adults.

Since leaving the WSBA to focus on the grass roots side I have assisted MWBC with their weekly sessions through the expansion and also with some of their “roadshow” coaching sessions within league clubs.

Personally, I have also run some ad-hoc coaching sessions for groups of players in the Rugby and District Badminton Association, and occasionally coach students on a 1-2-1 basis in the Rugby area.

Playing experience:

I have been playing badminton since I was around 13 years old. Introduced to the sport by my parents, who were very good league players at the time.

Outside of coaching I am a league player myself in both the Rugby and Coventry leagues playing men’s and mixed doubles.

I have played for many clubs in my time. Starting with AV Rugby/BW Rugby, then moving to Central Sports, and I currently play for Hunters Badminton Club in Rugby, where I am Chairman. I am also Secretary of the Rugby and District Badminton Association.

And…as if I needed more, I am also a racquet stringer.

About

Craig Stanley

BADMINTON ENGLAND FOUNDATION COACH

I’ve been playing badminton, the world’s greatest sport, since I first picked up a racket at around 4 or 5 years old.
Scarily, that means I have been playing for over 40 years!
In fact, it has even been said, I had one of the world’s greatest coaches.
George started coaching me back in….. well, lets just say it was more than a couple of years ago!
I began by hitting a shuttle around in the back garden, then quickly became addicted to the sport and joined a local club, much like the ones we coach at today.
This eventually led me onto becoming a Warwickshire county player, competing in county under 12’s (when I was 9 or 10) all the way through to under 18’s.
At this time, I was playing 7 times per week across 6 different club sessions over 6 days.
I continued playing regularly after the county under 18’s, with the occasional break when ‘Life’ got in the way!
Now, George has convinced me to come and help with coaching, which I am thoroughly enjoying, I should have done it years ago!
These days I am on court one way or another (playing or coaching) 4 times per week..
I encourage you to come and see what we have to offer and get involved in this most challenging, yet incredibly rewarding and fun sport.
Badminton is faster and more difficult than it looks, but the benefits are endless and it certainly beats watching anything on the TV
I hope to see you at the club soon.

I have also played in various ‘Local’ leagues around the country – depending on where I was living at the time (Oxfordshire, Peterborough and Leamington)

During my time in the forces, I also played for the RAF
